FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
1. WHY SHOULD I PURCHASE A MECHANICAL WATCH WHEN A QUARTZ
WATCH WILL KEEP BETTER TIME?
It is true that a quartz watch will
keep better time but it does not have the lasting
qualities of the mechanical. We are still repairing mechanical timepieces
from
the 1870`s. The quartz technology changes with the wind. Manufacturers
are
coming out with new movements and discontinuing existing movements.
This
means the circuit boards are no longer being made. The circuit boards
deteriorate
with time and are damaged by unqualified personnel
. If this watch is very special to the owner they are in trouble
not being able to get
the parts to keep it running. The new movements are usually of less
quality and
do not fit the existing dials. Mechanical watch can be repaired
by most
watchmakers and the parts are most always available. The Sentyme
watch is much more attention getting with its shimmering exposed
balance wheel and will definitely create conversation.
2. WHAT IS A JEWEL?
A jewel is synthetic corundum (ruby
& sapphire) that is imbedded into the plates
of a watch where the pinions come through the plates and serve as
bearings for
the pivots (axels) of the train wheels. These hard minerals have
less friction and
will not wear as does brass bushing or just metal holes. When pocket
watches
were used on the railroad, they required 19-23 jeweled watches as
the official
railroad watch.
3. WHO IS SENTYME?
Sentyme Watch Company was started
by Jim Sholders to provide a good solid
distinctive mechanical watch that is affordable for those who enjoy
the
distinctiveness of the mechanical watch. There are a lot of people
who love
watches but just cannot afford the lofty prices of the present prestigious
watch market. Most everything else that is built today is disposable
and
obsolete within a few years. As a 38 year veteran watchmaker Jim
is
exposed to all the up coming problems with that favorite quartz
watch.
The mechanical watch with proper maintenance will last for generations
and become heirlooms rather than just a watch. Sentyme was
established to serve those who love, collect watches and
would like to have an heirloom to hand down.
4. WHAT IS AN AUTOMATIC WATCH?
The automatic watch basic design
was brought into production in the 1940s and
was the staple gents watch up through the 1970`s. Conventional mechanical
watches had to be wound every day. The automatic has a half moon
shape
weight that moves as you move. As this weight moves it drives a
series of
gears that automatically winds the watch.
5. WHAT DOES HIGH BEAT MEAN?
Most mechanical watches have a 16,800
beats per hour and has been the
standard for a very long time. The SENTYME WATCH has a 28,800
beats per hour. The higher the beat the more accurate
the time piece.
6. WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DOES SENTIMENTAL TYME ACCEPT?
Sentimental Tyme accepts most forms of payment. VISA, MASTERCARD,
and DISCOVER are accepted. Personal Checks and Money Orders are
also
accepted. Cash is fine too.
